Yeosu Odongdo Island (오동도), camellia trees heaven & great family walks

Nested right opposite to Yeosu World Expo Park, Odongdo Island is a perfect getaway for the whole family. Beautiful scenery with cliffs and blue sea landscape, Musical fountain and Colorful Camellia Trees forest – deservedly one of the best spots in Yeosu!

Approximately 350 km South of Seoul, Yeosu in Jeollanam Province is an ideal 3~4-day-long week-end destination. It features the same southern charm as Busan with fishing villages, beautiful panoramas, accessible beaches and picture-perfect temples. But it also is much smaller providing a relaxed atmosphere and smoother city traffic. A great base-camp when exploring other Jeollanam destinations such as Boseong Tea Plantation or Suncheon Bay.

During such long week-end stay, we fell totally in love ♥♥♥ with Yeosu and the region. We spent half a day on Odongdo Island and can’t recommend it enough!

Odongdo is a natural island just off the East coast of Yeosu. It is now reachable by foot (or taking the family tourist train) over the breakwater which connects it from the Yeosu World Expo Park.

This is an easy walk flat for about 750 meters with spectacular views at the Yeosu World Expo bay. Once on the small island itself, several ‘easy’ to ‘medium’ trails can be done. All footpaths are perfectly marked and well maintained. You will walk through bamboos forest as well as amid thousands of camellia trees which cover most of the island. The camellia flowers are supposed to be in full bloom from February to March.

You’ll have to take a few stairways up and down to discover the various viewpoints, creeks and cliffs. There are several tourist highlights along the way: Windy Corridor, Dragon Cave (which was very impressive), Seal Rock, etc. You can also climb up the hill to the Lighthouse, a popular tourist attraction.

Spectacular and fun for all – kids from 5 years and above recommended for the trail part.

After the walk, why not heading back to the musical fountain on the island’s side looking right towards Yeosu Expo Bay. The fountain provides a nice break with water sprays synchronized to various musical tracks.

On the island, several snacking options are available.
